I adore my job, however it seems that management is extremely paranoid... Their problem! They can spend hours upon hours watching via security camera; me mop, or get down on my knees and scrub like mad. I have absolutely no intention to fuck this up.
Worrying about people watching you should only really bother you if you are doing something wrong.
Lets see... What else bothers me. Ah yes.
The men's urinals. As a woman, I do not have much experience with them. (Nor what goes on in mens bathrooms on the usual day...) however... what I really do not understand, is why they seem to get COVERED in pubic hair, in the 11 hours the spa is open. Every night they are painstakingly cleaned, each and every hair collected and disposed of. ... Yet at the start of every shift, the urinals are just covered.
Now I'm asking, seriously. What the HELL are guys doing, to get that much hair on a urinal? Do they dip their balls into the water for a quick rinse off? Not even the women's shower collects as much hair as the men's urinal. I DREAD doing it, when it's my job. (Though that seems to be thankfully rare)
Lets see... Oh! Because the upper management is apparently paranoid and watching us constantly, we are not allowed to take our break outside of the employee locker area. Sit on some padded benches and watch the aquariums? Not allowed! Go to one of the comfy lounge chairs and enjoy them for a little? Newp! Sit inside the (now cool) sauna's that always smell so very good? Newp!
Here, have some really crappy plastic chairs to sit in while great comfort and environments designed to be relaxing (rather then easy to clean) are less then twenty feet away. It's a fact of the job... but it's kinda mean.
One thing that amuses me greatly... is the people I work with. You have these extremely intelligent people, who come from incredibly varied backgrounds, who all have decided to do shifts at the spa.
My night manager is a writer. With several books out. One man had been training to be a priest for many years. One woman is a grandmother who just had a divorce.
When people think of janitorial staff, they think of uneducated people. People who aren't terribly intelligent, who are too dull or unskilled to find work elsewhere.
It's nothing but a myth. Much like Dilbert's Garbage man, it seems that inappropriately intelligent people end up in what appear to be silly jobs.
The reasoning though, is quite simple. The pay is quite nice. No prestige, so they're always looking for people, and turnover tends to be quite high. (I was hired a month and a half ago, in that time I've seen three people leave). They leave their work at work. Once I finish at work, all it takes is a good hot shower, and I'm me again. I can attend to my hobbies as I wish, and I never have to worry about dragging stress or more work home with me.
Finally... Do you have any idea how well you can think? You have eight hours, where you might see a person every two hours or so, doing something so active that you get an exercise buzz... and you can have it as quiet as you want... To just think.
And I get paid more then any of my friends do.
I love my Job.
